Learnings from a breastfeeding mama
Let’s talk about breastfeeding. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie navigating the world of nursing, having the right tools can make your breastfeeding journey smoother and way more enjoyable. Buckle up, because we’re about to dive into the must-have breastfeeding products that’ll make you feel like a total rockstar mom!
The Perfect Pump: Your Best Friend for Busy Days
First up, let’s talk pumps. If you’re heading back to work, or just need a little break, a good breast pump is your ticket to freedom. Manual pumps are great for occasional use and won’t break the bank. I personally never used one but have heard great things about this one.
But if you’re planning to pump more often (aka every 3 hours like me..), an electric pump might be your BFF. After much trial and error, my ultimate combo was the Spectra S1 with the Pumpables Liquid Kit.
If you’re looking for something more portable, I ended up using the Willow, it’s convenient and lightweight but can be a bit finicky to suction on. Also, spillage is a real risk with this pump if you don’t know what you’re doing.
What I tried but didn’t like:
- Pumpables Genie Advanced: conceptually amazing but not strong enough suction for me. It’s a great price point and very portable.
- Medela Pump in Style: this pump is annoying because it’s not as good as a hospital grade but its also not portable. It really needed to pick a lane
- Medela Hands Free Electric: fantastic suction and so portable BUT the tubing is unique to Medela making it hard to switch out the milk cups. I personally prefer the “Madonna” style but also needed a better flange than medela could offer me.
Nursing Pads: Keeping Things Dry and Fresh
Let’s be real—breastfeeding can sometimes turn into a bit of a leaky situation. Nursing pads are here to save the day. Just get the disposable ones, they’re more hygienic and less laundry. I used the Lansinoh pads, they come in bulk packages and are comfy enough to sleep in.
A Cozy Nursing Bra: Because Comfort is Key
Ladies, if you haven’t already discovered the magic of a good nursing bra, let me introduce you! Go for bras that are soft, stretchy, and offer easy access for feeding.
My top choices:
- Larken X: this is a combo pumping and nursing bra. It’s comfortable and so great for traveling.
- Everything Bra: this isn’t the most supportive but its so comfy, I slept in it every night for 10 months.
- Pumping Bra: this is what I used at home (and before I found the Larken). It’s discrete and easy to take on and off.
- Mama by Aerie: my go to everyday bra. It’s seamless and won’t break the bank so you can buy a few sizes as your breasts change postpartum. This is a nursing bra only, you won’t be able to pump easily in it.
Milk Storage Bags: For When You’re on the Go
If you’re building up a stash of milk (because sometimes mama needs a night out!), milk storage bags are essential. They’re designed to be freezer-friendly and can hold a good amount of milk. Make sure to get all the air bubbles out and be sure to label them with the date and time, because nobody’s got time to guess when it was pumped! I liked the Motif Medical brand but usually insurance will cover this for you.
Hydration Station
Last but not least, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Breastfeeding makes you thirsty AF, and staying hydrated is key for maintaining your milk supply. I became addicted to Coconut Water, it was the perfect combination of electrolytes and calories. This brand was my breast feeding crack.
