Sun Safety in South Florida

Sun Safety in South Florida

Let’s chat about something that’s as inevitable as diaper changes and baby giggles: the blazing sun. As two South Florida Moms, this is a constant topic of discussion. Lucky for us we’re blessed with year-round sunshine, which means our babies get to enjoy the great outdoors (and let’s be honest, we do too). But before we dive into those sunny playdates and beach days, let’s talk about keeping your little sunshine safe from the sun’s rays.

Why Sun Safety Matters

First off, let’s get one thing straight: sunburns aren’t cute. They’re painful, they can cause long-term skin damage, and they’ll definitely cramp your style when you’re trying to capture that perfect baby beach photo. Babies have delicate skin that’s much more sensitive than ours, so they’re at higher risk for sunburns. Plus, excessive sun exposure now can set the stage for future skin issues, so let’s keep those tiny toes safe and sound!

Dress Your Baby Like a Sun-Safe Superstar

  1. Sun-Protective Clothing: Go for lightweight, long-sleeved onesies and pants. We know, it sounds like a lot for our tropical climate, but these clothes are specially designed to block UV rays. Think of them as your baby’s superhero cape—only way more practical and a lot less flashy. We adore the Swimzip Suits, they’re UPF 50 and so easy to get on and off when wet.
  2. Hats, Hats, and More Hats: A wide-brimmed hat is a must. It not only shades your baby’s face but also protects their neck and ears. Choose a hat with a chin strap so it doesn’t end up as a sun-drenched casualty in the middle of a toddler tantrum. We love these UPF and adjustable hats. They come in a pack of two, dry quick and are comfy!
  3. Baby Sunglasses: Little shades aren’t just adorable; they’re functional too. Opt for sunglasses with UV protection to keep those tiny eyes safe from harmful rays. Plus, they make for some seriously cute photos! Our top picks are these or these.

Sunscreen Savvy

  • Apply Generously and Often: Don’t skimp! Apply sunscreen about 15-30 minutes before heading outside. And remember, sunscreen wears off, so reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. Applying sunscreen can harder than wrestling an alligator which is why we LOVE the Solar Buddy sunscreen applicator, it makes application so easy and you can use any sunscreen of your choice.

Hydrate and Chill

  • Stay Hydrated: Babies can get dehydrated quickly, especially in the heat. Make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids. For babies under six months, this means more frequent breastfeeding or formula feeding. For older babies, offer water alongside their regular feedings. We love the Camel Bak waterbottles for on the go, leak-proof hydration.

There you have it, Mama Bears! With these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy South Florida’s sunshine (or any sunshine!) without the sunburn drama. Keep your little ones cool, protected, and hydrated, and you’ll be setting the stage for countless fun, sun-filled adventures.
